How It Works – Backroom Box

Backroom Box is a zero-knowledge anonymous document submission platform. Here is how it protects your identity:

Step 1: Encrypt in Your Browser

Files are encrypted client-side using AES-256-GCM before they ever leave your device. The encryption key never reaches our servers.

Step 2: Upload Anonymously

The encrypted file is uploaded without any account, email address, or identifying information. No IP addresses are logged. No user-agents are stored.

Step 3: Receive a Receipt Code

After submission you receive a unique receipt code. Use this code to check the status of your submission without revealing your identity.

Step 4: Operator Review

Submissions are reviewed and may be published to the public transparency archive or kept private as requested.

Zero-Knowledge Design

We cannot read your files. We do not know who you are. The decryption key exists only in the URL fragment of your browser — it is never sent to our server.
